LESSON PLAN FOR WHERE DO THEY LIVE
1. Content Standards:
ALDSE Science 1.4 Describe survival traits of living things, including color, shape, size, texture, and covering.
·      Describing a variety of habitats and natural homes of animals

2. Student Outcome:
SWBAT:
I.  Define the terms habitat and diorama.

II. Give examples of different animal habitats as well as their own type of habitat.

III. Identify animal habitats of birds, fish, bees, rabbits, spiders, fish, people, monkeys, mosquitoes, and duchesses.

3. Materials:
rabbit printable
grass printable

  • 2 white or blue paper plates
  • A roughly 6 inch diameter circle of clear plastic cut from discarded packaging material (or clear plastic wrap for food)
  • Colored construction paper or tempera paint
  • Scissors and a craft knife (optional)
  • Glue, tape, and stapler
  • Crayons, or markers
  • Thread of yarn (about a foot total)
4. Procedure:
I. The teacher will then have students complete a KWL chart to evaluate prior knowledge of habitats.

II. The teacher give the students complete a walk-through of the book "The Fisherman and His Wife". The teacher will then read the story "The Fisherman and His Wife".

III. The teacher will describe and define the vocabulary word habitat. The student will discuss the basic needs of the animal: food, water, shelter, and space.

IV. Upon completion of the discussion, the students will be sent to their seats to complete the activity for this lesson. The students will make an Aquarium Paper Plate Diorama Craft. At this time the teacher will show the example of a diorama. 
V. The teacher will review what was learned during the previous lesson.

VI. The teacher will conduct a walk though and read the story "The Runaway Bunny".

VII. The student will color, cut and paste the rabbit and grass template (above) to the back of the Aquarium Paper Plate Diorama Craft, whereby having created two animal habitats as their visual arts component of the lesson.

VIII. The student will then view a video of the song "I Got a Habitat" by The Bumblemen.

IX. The students will then complete a whole group activity "A ____ is a house for a _____". The will use these to assess student knowledge of animal habitats. The teacher will let the student pick a pre-cut animal from a basket. The student will then attach the animal to the correct habitat.
